Pakistan Downs Five Indian Fighter Jets Amid Escalating Tensions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Pakistan Air Force shot down five Indian fighter jets amidst the tension between the two neighboring countries. The attack occurred on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, after India launched a missile strike on nine civilian locations in Pakistan.

"The Pakistan Air Force has shot down at least five Indian fighter jets in response to India’s recent cross-border aggression," said Pakistan's Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, to the broadcaster Geo TV as quoted by Anadolu.

Earlier, Pakistan's military spokesman, General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, confirmed the two Indian fighter jets had crashed, as reported by CNN.

"There are other reports of multiple damage that Pakistani forces, both on the ground and air, have inflicted. But I can confirm to you that at least two aircraft of the Indian Air Force have been downed," said Chaudhry.

There is no response from the Indian government regarding the Pakistani media reports on the crashing of their fighter jets.

Prior to this, India launched a missile strike targeting several cities in Pakistan and the Pakistani-administered Kashmir region.

Chaudhry stated that India had fired missiles at the cities of Bahawalpur, Muridke, Bagh, Muzaffarabad, and Kotli from their territory.

He confirmed that at least eight people were killed, 35 were injured, and two others were missing.

According to Pakistani security sources, the Indian jets that crashed were targeted "while attempting to strike Pakistan using Indian airspace."

These jets included three Rafale aircraft, one MiG-29, and one SU-30, said the source.

Along the Line of Control (LoC), dividing the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region between India and Pakistan, the two countries' armies exchanged fire.

Tensions escalated between the two neighbors after an attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, an Indian-administered region of Kashmir, which killed 26 people.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack and alleged cross-border links between Pakistan and the attackers. However, Pakistan denied the allegations.
