TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several historic buildings in Majorca, part of Spain’s Balearic Islands, have been vandalized with graffiti as a form of protest against the overwhelming influx of tourists.
The action has received various responses from tour operators to local residents.
The historic sites targeted include the Royal Palace of La Almudaina, built in the 14th century. The palace served as the official residence of the King and Queen during their stay in Majorca.
Along with the Palma Cathedral, the palace is a landmark in the capital of the Balearic Islands. The historic stone walls near the royal garden s'Hort del Rei and Dalt Murada, a beautifully restored noble house, have also been targeted.
Protest Graffiti Against Tourists
Tourists visiting the area were surprised by the presence of graffiti. While most could not understand the messages, which were written in Catalan, their meanings in English, such as "damn tourists" and "get out of our city," were clear in tone.
Despite the language barrier, the bold red and blue anti-tourist slogans conveyed an unmistakable message. Local police are now searching for those responsible for defacing culturally and historically significant buildings, noting that cleanup efforts will be costly.
Pro Guías Mallorca, a local tour guide company, condemned the graffiti as a regrettable act and an attack on Palma’s heritage. The company emphasized that there are more constructive ways to express protest.
"There are many ways to protest, as long as the forms are appropriate, and it is an inalienable right. But this is unforgivable," the company said, as reported by Mirror.
They stated that the people who did this have gone against themselves and the values that make up a community. Local residents, who are used to repeated demonstrations and protests against mass tourism, are also using social media to condemn the vandalism.
Iconic Landmarks of Majorca
The Royal Palace of La Almudaina was built in the 14th century. The palace reflects the artistic style that has changed throughout the history of the island.
The building consists of a square tower that houses the King's Palace, the Queen's Palace, a room called the Tinell, the Royal Chapel, and a courtyard. Inside, there are various tapestries and furniture that evoke various historical monuments.
As reported by Patrimonio Nacional, the palace is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 07:00 PM. It is closed on Mondays, and admission is free on Wednesdays and Sundays from 03:00 PM to 07:00 PM. There is access for people with disabilities and manual wheelchairs are available.
During the visit, tourists are allowed to take photos without flash for personal use, except in places where it is strictly prohibited. The use of tripods, selfie sticks, and similar accessories is not allowed.
