TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The artificial intelligence firm OpenAI is set to debut its first smartphone earlier than initially expected. Technology analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that the device may be launched in the first half of 2027, ahead of the previously targeted 2028.
According to 9to5Google, Kuo previously mentioned that OpenAI is focused on incorporating AI agents into this new phone. The device is designed to support a more integrated AI user experience.
In his latest update, Kuo stated that the project's development is progressing faster, resulting in the expected launch schedule for the OpenAI smartphone being brought forward from the previous projection.
The OpenAI smartphone is rumored to utilize a specialized version of the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 chipset. According to several earlier reviews, the chipset is said to have an enhanced image signal processor to improve HDR quality.
Additionally, the device is said to be equipped with dual-architecture NPUs, LPDDR6 RAM, and UFS 5.0 storage. The combination of these specifications is considered capable of supporting an AI-based smartphone experience.
If the OpenAI phone project progresses smoothly, around 30 million units are expected to be launched collectively in 2027 and 2028. This target is deemed ambitious by several analysts, including Kuo.
