TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI has pulled back the latest update for ChatGPT's GPT-4o model after receiving criticism for the chatbot's personality being deemed too "flattering and disruptive." OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed that the company is working on rectifying this issue.
The cancellation of this update has been fully implemented for free users since the beginning of last week. Altman stated that the cancellation for paid users will also be executed soon.
“Now 100% rolled back for free ChatGPT users and will be rolled back for paid users, hopefully today,” he wrote in a post on Platform X, cited from The Verge, Monday, May 5, 2025.
“We’re working on additional fixes to model personality and will share more in the coming days,” Altman continued.
OpenAI also explained this change to users. “We’ve rolled back last week’s GPT-4o update in ChatGPT because it was overly flattering and agreeable. You now have access to an earlier version with more balanced behavior,” the company wrote.
Prior to this, Altman announced that GPT-4o had been updated with improvements in "intelligence and personality." However, just minutes after the announcement, an X user commented that ChatGPT felt like a "yes-man." Altman immediately responded, “Yeah, it glazes too much,” and "will fix."
Two days later, Altman again announced that OpenAI is expediting rectifying the personality issues that emerged from recent GPT-4o updates.
