TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has deployed 30 ships to deliver humanitarian assistance to victims of the catastrophic floods and landslides in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra.
Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said the aid represents contributions from multiple government ministries as well as public donations.
“We have 30 ships, so we are utilizing all of them to head toward the affected areas,” Trenggono said at Nizam Zachman Port in North Jakarta on Saturday, December 6, 2025. In addition to the ships, the ministry has dispatched a maritime surveillance aircraft to reach remote locations where access remains difficult.
Trenggono noted that this marks the sixth aid delivery carried out by his ministry for the Sumatra disaster response. The latest mission, conducted on Saturday, transported 27 tons of essential supplies, including clothing, ready-to-eat meals, eggs, rice, and diapers.
He explained that the journey from Jakarta to the designated delivery points takes around two days. “There are three main distribution hubs: the largest in Sibolga, followed by Lhokseumawe and Langsa,” he said.
The minister added that Starlink satellite connectivity is being used to maintain communication with response teams in the disaster-hit regions, particularly in areas where power and telecommunications are still down.
The ministry is also coordinating closely with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and local communities that have set up communal kitchens to ensure food aid is distributed promptly to evacuees.
According to BNPB data from the Disaster Data Geoportal, as of Saturday morning, December 6, the floods in Sumatra have resulted in 883 deaths, with 520 people still missing and at least 4,200 others injured.
Authorities warn that these figures could continue to rise as search efforts progress and communication networks are restored.
