TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After achieving global success, the animated musical film KPop Demon Hunters will return with a new story. Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have signed a deal to produce the sequel for release in 2029.
According to The Korea Times, this move demonstrates the confidence of the two major studios in developing the Korean-themed animation franchise. KPop Demon Hunters, released in 2025, made history as the first Netflix animated film to surpass 300 million views. Its main song, Golden, even reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the most impactful K-pop cultural phenomena in the world.
Director Teases the Return of Old Characters
Director Maggie Kang hinted that the upcoming sequel will delve into aspects that were left unexplored in the world of KPop Demon Hunters. "We didn’t reveal the full backstory, so I already have several ideas for how it could continue," she said. She also teased the possibility of the return of characters previously thought to be gone.

As cited from Deadline, although the release schedule has been confirmed for 2029, there is no certainty whether the film will be screened in theaters or on Netflix. The production team stated that four years is deemed reasonable considering the complex process of animation and music production.
The Power of K-Pop in the Global Animation World
According to Variety, the decision to continue this project demonstrates the significant potential of combining K-pop, fantasy action, and animation in the global market. The first film successfully combined Korean culture with Hollywood's distinctive cinematic style, resulting in a unique visual identity that appealed to audiences of all ages.
With this sequel, it seems that Netflix and Sony want to increase the visibility of Asian content on their global platform. If there are no changes to the schedule, KPop Demon Hunters 2 is expected to be one of the most anticipated animated films towards the end of the decade.
