TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) revealed that 22 percent of schools still reported cases of teachers receiving gifts from parents in exchange for improving students’ grades. This finding was based on the 2024 Education Integrity Assessment Survey (SPI) results.
“In fact, according to parents at 22 percent of schools, there are still teachers who accept gifts so that students can get better grades or pass their classes,” said Wawan Wardiana, KPK’s Deputy for Education and Community Participation, at the KPK Anti-Corruption Center Building in South Jakarta on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
The survey also found that 30 percent of teachers and lecturers and 18 percent of school principals and university rectors still believe receiving gifts from students or parents is acceptable. Wawan also noted that at 60 percent of schools, it is common for parents to give gifts or tokens of appreciation to teachers during religious holidays or graduation promotions.
The 2024 Education Integrity Assessment Survey (SPI) involved respondents from more than 36,000 educational institutions, including over 35,000 Primary and Secondary Education Units (Dasmen) and around 1,200 Higher Education Units (Dikti). Wawan explained that the total number of respondents came from various elements within the education ecosystem, reaching 449,865 individuals.
The survey used two methods. First, an online method was conducted through WhatsApp, email blasts, and CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview). Second, a hybrid method using the CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interview) approach.
Meanwhile, the 2023 Education Integrity Assessment Survey (SPI) found that 24 percent of teachers stated that new students were admitted to schools because they gave certain rewards to school officials. Additionally, 42.4 percent of teachers reported that students who did not meet the requirements were still accepted.
Wawan continued, based on the survey, many people consider it acceptable for parents to do whatever it takes to get their children admitted to school, including bribing or intimidating school officials.
“The gratification value we found indicates that a small number of parents offered extra rewards to ensure their children could get into school,” said Wawan.
