TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  Indonesia’s National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has condemned the acid attack against Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator for External Affairs of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS). Komnas HAM Chairperson Anis Hidayah stated that the attack constitutes a violation of the right to a sense of security guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution and the Human Rights Law.

“Andrie Yunus’s activities as a member of KontraS and the Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD), who has been actively critical in his human rights advocacy work, strongly suggest that the attack is likely part of a broader campaign targeting human rights defenders,” said Anis on Friday, March 13, 2026.

“Komnas HAM strongly urges the police to investigate this case in an independent, swift, transparent, and accountable manner,” said Anis.

The incident occurred shortly after Andrie recorded a podcast at the Office of the Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) titled "Remilitarism and Judicial Review in Indonesia," which concluded around 11:00 p.m. While heading home, he stopped by a gas station near Cikini, Central Jakarta.

After that, two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle doused Andrie with acid. He sustained burns covering 24 percent of his body, primarily on his right and left hands, face, chest, and eyes.

Komnas HAM has requested the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) to provide protection for the victim and parties involved in the attack. Komnas HAM also advocates for the victim’s recovery, both physically and psychologically.

KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya stated that the identity of the perpetrator who doused him with acid remains unknown. He explained that Andrie collapsed onto the road after the attack. “The victim immediately screamed in pain and dropped his motorcycle,” said Dimas on Friday, March 13, 2026.

He said the incident occurred after Andrie filled up his gas at a gas station in the Cikini area. As he continued on his way, Andrie, who was riding a motorcycle, passed two individuals—believed to be men—riding a scooter. The two then doused Andrie with acid.

After dousing him, the perpetrators dropped a stainless steel cup while attempting to flee. The perpetrators are believed to have fled toward Jalan Salemba Raya in Central Jakarta. At the time of this writing, Andrie Yunus remains hospitalized at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Jakarta.
