TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Interim Charge d'Affaires (ICDA) of the Japanese Embassy, Myochin Mitsuru, stated that Japan has made several efforts to ease the situation in the Middle East. "We have exerted maximum efforts to ease the situation in this region," he said during a media discussion at the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
He mentioned the tension in the Middle East, particularly the attacks on Iran, which ultimately had a very serious global impact on the ship crossings in the Strait of Hormuz. Myochin stated that Japan is pushing for de-escalation efforts as early as possible, through cooperation with G7 countries and the Gulf countries in the Middle East. "We are currently making diplomatic efforts to urge the Gulf countries to de-escalate the situation as soon as possible," he said.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has also emphasized the need to make joint efforts with the international community, including engaging the United States to ease the situation as early as possible and achieve peace and stability in the Middle East.
During her visit to Washington, D.C. on March 19, 2026, Takaichi met with U.S. President Donald Trump and agreed that they would maintain close communication to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, including the Strait of Hormuz. "Both leaders agreed to communicate intensively for the early realization of de-escalation of the situation in that region," Myochin further added.
In addition, Japan has also made diplomatic efforts with Iran through telephone conversations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Diplomatic efforts have also been conducted at the level of the Foreign Ministers. Myochin said that Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi has also had five telephone conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing the importance of restoring stability in the Strait of Hormuz.
On this occasion, Japan urged Iran to immediately ensure freedom and security of navigation for all ships, including Japanese and other Asian ships.
Not only bilateral efforts, but Japan has also made multilateral efforts by joining a joint statement by leaders related to the Strait of Hormuz on March 19.
Most recently, on April 17, Japan also participated in a meeting of leaders on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz organized by France and the United Kingdom.
