Iran Responds to Indonesia's Peace Mediation Offer

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Monday, March 2, 2026, as the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran. Sugiono revealed the conversation in a post on his X account on Tuesday, March 3.

Sugiono conveyed Indonesia's readiness to play a role in peace efforts. "Indonesia is ready to play a constructive role in advancing peace, including offering our willingness to facilitate dialogue or mediation," he said, emphasizing that the offer aims to prevent further escalation and stop the deaths of innocents.

The minister also urged all parties to exercise restraint. "Respect for international law and the UN Charter must be upheld. Dialogue and diplomacy are the only proper paths to regional stability," he said.

Indonesia Offers to Mediate

Indonesia's position had previously been conveyed through a written statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, February 28, 2026, just hours after Israel and the United States once again attacked Tehran. In the release, the government expressed regret over the failure of negotiations between the United States and Iran, which led to a renewed outbreak of armed conflict.

"The Indonesian government, in this case, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, has expressed readiness to facilitate dialogue to create conducive security conditions," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

The government also emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each country and called for the resolution of any differences through peaceful means.

The same statement noted, "If agreed by both parties, the President of Indonesia is willing to depart for Tehran to mediate." However, in the official release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the statement from Sugiono, there was no direct condemnation of the United States and Israel for launching the joint attack on Iran.

Iranian Embassy's Response

The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, expressed appreciation for this initiative. "We appreciate the good intentions expressed by the Republic of Indonesia government, but until now, there have been no related steps taken," said Boroujerdi at a press conference at his official residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Boroujerdi stated that his country remains open to further communication with Indonesia. However, he was reluctant to confirm the possibility of successful mediation.

"Whether mediation can produce results in a situation like this or not, I cannot answer. But communication and interaction between senior officials of both countries are certainly possible and can be done," he said.

Earlier, through an official release on Sunday, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Indonesia also expressed appreciation for the support of the Indonesian government and people, welcoming the readiness of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to mediate. Iran also urged Indonesian officials to take a firmer stance against actions deemed to violate international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
