TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has announced the death of Indonesian peacekeeper Corporal Rico Pramudia of Indonesian Army (TNI), who succumbed to serious injuries sustained in an attack in southern Lebanon last month.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, UNIFIL said the 31-year-old Indonesian Army soldier died after receiving nearly a month of treatment at a hospital in Beirut for severe wounds.
“UNIFIL deplores the passing today of Corporal Rico Pramudia, who was critically injured following a projectile explosion in his base in Adchit Al Qusayr on the night of 29 March,” the mission said in its statement, monitored in Jakarta on Friday.
The peacekeeping mission expressed deep condolences to his family, colleagues, the Government of Indonesia, and the Indonesian Army, under which he served.
Following the latest fatality among UNIFIL personnel, the mission urged all parties to uphold their obligations under international law, including ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times.
“Deliberate attacks against peacekeepers constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes,” UNIFIL said.
With Rico’s death, Indonesia has now lost four Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel serving under UNIFIL in southern Lebanon within the past month.
Previously, Staff Sergeant Farizal Rhomadhon was killed in the same incident on March 29, when an artillery strike also left Rico initially wounded.
On March 30, two other Indonesian soldiers, Captain Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ikhwan, were killed when an escort convoy came under attack.
The series of attacks between March 29–30 and April 3 also left seven other Indonesian peacekeepers injured, in addition to Rico, who later died after being hospitalized.
Besides Indonesia, France has also lost two soldiers serving with UNIFIL amid rising tensions in southern Lebanon following an attack on a patrol on April 18.
