TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, said his ministry will discuss President Prabowo Subianto's request to restrict online game use in schools. Several ministries, he said, will be included in the talks. These include the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi), the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
"Involves at least four ministries," Mu'ti said in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Earlier on Sunday, through the Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, President Prabowo Subianto called for the restriction of online games in schools. This came against the backdrop of blasts in Jakarta state high school (SMAN) 72 on November 7, 2025, which injured at least 54 students.
Abdul Mu'ti said his ministry previously proposed a regulation on online games for children, citing the double-edged nature of them. According to Mu'ti, online games pose several risks, despite acknowledging their benefits. "The problem now is, who can supervise when a child plays games? Especially when playing games with a mobile phone in their bedrooms," Mu'ti said.
According to Mu'ti, there are many violent scenes in online games that may have a negative impact on children. "[Violent behavior] inspired by the games they play, or indirectly, there are risks of psychological problems," he said, citing the explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta.
The suspected perpetrator of the blasts, who also attended the school, was allegedly inspired by the shows and online games he played daily. Mu'ti said the incident was evidence that there is still the potential for children to carry out uncontrollable behaviors.
"This is what we must do. We must improve the approach so it's not too structural, but more participatory and comprehensive," Minister Abdul Mu'ti said.
