TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar stated that the number of divorce cases nationwide has decreased in the past two years. The Minister expressed this during a work meeting with House of Commission VIII (DPR) at the DPR building in Jakarta on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
"Based on data from Statistics Indonesia, the number of national divorce cases continues to show a significant decreasing trend," Nasaruddin said in his presentation.
He explained that in 2023, 463,000 divorce cases were recorded. This number was reportedly decreased by 10.2 percent compared to the previous year. The decreasing trend also occurred in 2024, with 394 thousand divorce cases recorded. "A decrease of 14.9 percent compared to 2023," he said.
Nasaruddin believes that the decrease in national divorce cases is due to the implementation of the marriage guidance program. According to him, the number of participants in the marriage guidance program has also increased in the past two years.
"This indicates a positive correlation between the obligation to attend the guidance and the decrease in divorce rates," said the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque.
The program, run by the Directorate General of Islamic Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, is mandatory for every couple before getting married. Marriage guidance focuses on strengthening a couple's mental, spiritual, and social readiness to build a harmonious, loving, and compassionate family.
Nasaruddin also presented the achievements of the prevention program for child marriage through pre-marriage guidance for teenagers. He stated that 64,000 teenagers aged 15 to 19 have participated in this program.
This program involves educational activities that promote Islamic values related to physical and spiritual readiness for starting a family. Pre-marriage guidance for teenagers is provided in both public and Islamic boarding schools.
As a result, he pointed out a decrease in early marriage cases in Indonesia. Based on the data compiled by his ministry, a decreasing trend occurred in 2023 and 2024.
During those two years, there was a 52 percent decrease in early marriage cases for children. "The number of couples under the age of 19 who got married in 2023 decreased to 5,489. In 2024, it further decreased to 4,150 couples," he stated.
With this significant decreasing trend, Nasaruddin projects that early marriages could decrease by 70-75 percent by the end of this year. "The teenage guidance program has proven to be effective in preventing early marriage and increasing the awareness of the younger generation about the importance of being ready for married life," he said.
