TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chief of the Indonesian Army Staff, General Maruli Simanjuntak, has confirmed that the Indonesian Army is currently preparing personnel for a planned deployment as part of a peacekeeping mission to Gaza.
"Currently, the Indonesian Army is preparing personnel for deployment," Maruli told Tempo on Monday, November 17, 2025. However, General Maruli declined to specify the exact number of troops or the units that will be deployed.
This preparation aligns with statements made earlier by the Deputy Chief of the Indonesian Navy, who mentioned that the Marine Corps is being readied for the mission to the Gaza Strip. The Marines will join other Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel in this endeavor.
"The entire Indonesian National Armed Forces is currently preparing to support the government's policy," said the Deputy Chief of the Navy, Erwin, during the 80th-anniversary celebration of the Marine Corps in Cilandak, South Jakarta, on Monday, November 17, 2025.
The Indonesian Navy is preparing the Purple Beret Corps (Marines) alongside other specialized units. From the Marines, several specialized battalions will be deployed, including those focused on engineering, health, and logistics support.
The Indonesian Military Headquarters previously stated that the 20,000 personnel being prepared for the Gaza mission are competent and experienced soldiers. These troops have extensive experience in conducting Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW), both domestically and internationally.
The Head of the TNI Information Center, Major General Freddy Ardianzah, specified that the deployed personnel will primarily consist of health forces and engineering units. Their tasks will include establishing health services for war-affected civilians and constructing public facilities and essential infrastructure.
The mission is being equipped with specialized gear, including field hospitals, emergency medical equipment, ambulances, and clean water and sanitation devices. "We are also prepared with engineering construction capabilities, heavy equipment, and reconstruction facilities," Freddy stated, as reported by Antara.
The deployment plan follows the readiness expressed by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to send 20,000 Indonesian troops to help secure peace in the Gaza region of Palestine. He made this statement during his speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York, United States, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
