TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir has officially sent off 290 Indonesian athletes who will compete in the ASEAN Para Games 2025 in Thailand, scheduled to take place from January 20 to 26, 2026.
The athletes, representing 18 sports disciplines, were dispatched in a ceremony held at the Pendapa of Solo City Hall in Central Java on Saturday, January 10, 2026. At the event, Erick said Indonesia is targeting 82 gold medals and a third-place finish in the overall standings.
“We are aiming for optimal results with 82 gold medals. The competition will be tough, especially from Thailand as the host, as well as Vietnam and Malaysia,” Erick said after the ceremony.
He stressed that Indonesian para-athletes carry not only the goal of winning medals but also the responsibility of representing the nation abroad. According to Erick, their perseverance reflects Indonesia’s character, spirit, and dignity on the international stage.
“It is an honor for me to send off these national fighters. Our athletes are ambassadors who embody Indonesia’s identity,” he said.
Erick also underscored the importance of discipline, consistency, and long-term commitment in achieving success. He noted that Indonesia’s para-athletes have consistently delivered strong performances in regional multi-sport events, often finishing first or second.
“The challenge in Thailand will certainly be significant, but do not be afraid. Compete with confidence and prove your abilities,” he said.
The minister confirmed that the government will continue to provide performance bonuses, as in previous international competitions. Athletes who win gold medals will receive Rp1 billion (about US$64,000) per athlete, in line with directives from the president.
In addition, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has introduced a financial literacy program to help athletes manage their bonuses and income responsibly.
The initiative is designed to ensure that earnings are used not only for short-term needs, but also for savings, investment, and financial security after retirement from sports.
Erick added that government support for para-athletes continues to expand, including improvements in training facilities, psychological assistance, and other forms of support.
“We want our athletes to focus fully on training and competition, while ensuring their future and financial well-being are taken care of,” he said.
With these preparations, the government hopes Indonesia can maintain its strong record at the ASEAN Para Games and further strengthen the fighting spirit of its para-athletes at the regional level.
