Indonesia Says It Is Prepared to Help Broker Peace in Myanmar

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia remains committed to facilitating dialogue aimed at ending the conflict in Myanmar and supporting the country's reconciliation process, Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Natshir said on Thursday.

Natshir said Indonesia has consistently advocated peaceful engagement since the outbreak of the Myanmar crisis and continues to push for efforts based on ASEAN mechanisms, particularly the Five-Point Consensus.

"Indonesia is seeking to restore peace in Myanmar and support a reconciliation process," Natshir told reporters at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on July 16.

Indonesia Offers to Facilitate Dialogue

Natshir said ASEAN foreign ministers, during a meeting in Bangkok on July 12, reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing peace in Myanmar.

According to him, future peace efforts should continue to refer to the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, which was adopted in 2021 following Myanmar's military takeover.

"We will always be ready, whether to host or facilitate dialogue in order to find a solution to the conflict," he said.

Indonesia, which hosts the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, has played an active diplomatic role in promoting regional efforts to address the crisis.

Conflict Continues After 2021 Coup

Myanmar has remained engulfed in conflict since the military, led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup in February 2021.

The takeover triggered widespread protests and armed resistance, evolving into a prolonged conflict between the military junta and various opposition and ethnic armed groups.

Foreign Minister Reaffirms Indonesia's Readiness

Earlier this week, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono also reiterated Jakarta's willingness to help facilitate peace efforts in Myanmar.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, Sugiono said Indonesia was prepared to assist efforts to end the conflict in line with the Five-Point Consensus and mechanisms agreed upon by Myanmar stakeholders.

"Indonesia is ready to serve as a bridge for peace," Sugiono said on July 12.

Indonesia has repeatedly called for an inclusive political dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the crisis, while emphasizing ASEAN's central role in supporting stability in Myanmar and the wider Southeast Asian region.
