TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Saturday, September 12, welcomed the New Delhi Declaration adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit in India on September 12-13, which reaffirmed support for the Palestinian cause.
The ministry specifically welcomed the declaration’s rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians from their land, including Jerusalem; its call for an end to the Israeli occupation; its support for a two-state solution; and its backing for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.
It also welcomed support for the establishment of an independent, sovereign and viable Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967, borders, with Jerusalem as its capital.
Support for Palestinian Rights
Palestine also welcomed the declaration’s support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and its mandate, as well as calls to protect holy sites and ensure access to them in Jerusalem, protect Palestinians, and facilitate the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said it appreciated these positions because they are consistent with international law and relevant UN resolutions, while emphasizing the need to translate them into practical and concrete measures.
Call for International Action
The ministry also urged the international community to assume its legal and political responsibilities and work to implement and enforce international resolutions by ensuring an end to violations and what it described as crimes committed under the Israeli occupation, as well as all forms of forced displacement, settlement construction and annexation.
The ministry further called for the protection of Palestinians and the fulfillment of their legitimate national rights, particularly their right to self-determination.
The ministry stressed that implementing the positions and reaffirmations contained in the BRICS India declaration requires an end to the Israeli occupation and the fulfillment of Palestinian rights, including the establishment of an independent and sovereign state on their own land, with Jerusalem as its capital.
