Indonesia's Rupiah Drops to 16,520 per US Dollar; Further Decline Expected

7 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah exchange rate weakened to Rp16,520 per US dollar at the close of trading on Friday, May 9, 2025. Analysts predicted this weakening trend will persist into trading on Monday next week.

Today, the rupiah fell 18 points compared to the previous closing rate of Rp16,502 per US dollar. Currency observer Ibrahim Assuaibi anticipates continued fluctuation for the rupiah.

"For next Monday's trading, the rupiah will fluctuate but ultimately close lower, within the range of Rp16,510 to Rp16,570 per US dollar," Ibrahim said in his routine analysis on Friday, May 9, 2025.

Data from Bank Indonesia's Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) showed the rupiah weakening to Rp16,532 per US dollar, compared to Rp16,497 the previous day.

Ibrahim explained that several global factors influenced the exchange rate movement, including discussions between various countries and the U.S. regarding the implementation of reciprocal tariffs. The U.S. government is scheduled to meet with representatives from China and Switzerland to address this issue.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed a trade deal with the UK. While the U.S. is maintaining a 10 percent tariff on UK imports, the UK has agreed to reduce its tariffs from 5.1 percent to 1.8 percent.

The U.S. Commerce Secretary announced that the government plans to forge numerous new trade deals while maintaining the universal tariff of 10 percent.

Domestically, Ibrahim highlighted the results of a Bank Indonesia consumer survey in April 2025, which indicated that public confidence in economic conditions remains robust. The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) in April reached 121.7, an increase from 121.1 in March.

The Current Economic Condition Index (IKE) also rose, from 110.6 in March to 113.7 in April. "Increased consumer optimism in April 2025 originates from heightened confidence in current economic conditions and sustained positive expectations for the future economy," Ibrahim concluded.
