TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has confirmed a gas supply of 111 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) for the next 10 years from the Mako Gas Field in the Duyung Working Area, Natuna Islands, following the project’s official Final Investment Decision (FID).
The Mako Gas Field, operated by West Natuna Exploration Limited (WNEL), is located off the coast of Natuna in the Riau Islands at a sea depth of approximately 80 meters.
The FID announcement was made at the office of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas), attended by government officials and project partners.
Djoko Siswanto, Head of SKK Migas, described the FID approval as a major milestone for boosting national gas production.
"This FID approval reaffirms the project’s readiness to enter the construction and full execution phase in an effort to increase national gas lifting," Djoko said in a statement on Friday, March 6, 2026.
The project has progressed through a lengthy development process, starting with the signing of the Production Sharing Contract (PSC) in 2007, the discovery of gas reserves in 2017, approval of the Plan of Development (POD) in 2019, a POD revision in 2022, and the signing of the Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) in 2025. Production from the field is scheduled to begin in 2027.
Rakhmad Dewanto, President Director of PLN EPI, welcomed the FID achievement, highlighting its role in ensuring gas supply as per the GSPA agreement with WNEL signed on July 11, 2025.
The project also aligns with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ mandate for PLN EPI to build and operate the WNTS-Pemping gas pipeline.
"With the achievement of this FID, the gas supply schedule in the GSPA can be fulfilled to ensure gas supply for power plants, especially in the Batam and central Sumatra regions," Rakhmad said.
He noted that electricity demand in the region is rising by 12–15 percent annually, largely met by gas-fired power plants, while gas supply from mainland Sumatra is declining, making Natuna’s production increasingly vital for national energy resilience.
PLN EPI is currently constructing the WNTS-Pemping pipeline to distribute gas from Natuna to Batam. The infrastructure is expected to serve as the main distribution route for the region’s electricity system.
Erma Melina Sarahwati, Director of Gas and Fuel Oil at PLN EPI, confirmed that pipeline construction is proceeding on schedule. Groundbreaking began on February 10, 2026, with operations targeted to start in July 2026.
"This pipeline will be a crucial link to distribute gas from the Natuna region to the Batam electricity system," Erma said.
She added that the gas infrastructure development also supports Indonesia’s national energy transition strategy, promoting cleaner, more efficient, and domestically sourced energy.
"The development of this gas infrastructure not only strengthens national energy resilience but also supports the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy system," she added.
