TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government projects that more than 155 million people will travel during the Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah (Lebaran 2026), exceeding initial survey estimates.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, said the number reflects a 10 percent increase over earlier projections.
“To assist the public in planning their travel, an integrated information system will be available to help choose departure dates,” Pratikno said during a press conference at the Bina Graha Building, Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
“The initial survey, as noted by Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, estimated around 143.9 million travelers.”
Pratikno added that mobilizing 155 million people simultaneously presents a significant logistical challenge, noting that past Eid periods have consistently seen higher numbers than surveys predicted.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said the exodus is expected to occur in two waves. The first wave is projected for March 14-15, while the second will peak on March 18-19. The return journey is also expected to take place in two waves, on March 24-25 and March 28-29.
The government’s information system aims to provide real-time guidance for travelers, helping to manage the massive movement and ease congestion on roads and public transport during Indonesia’s annual mass exodus.
