TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and seven other countries strongly condemned what they described as the “horrific” treatment carried out by Israeli official Itamar Ben-Gvir against participants of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla while they were detained by Israeli forces.
“The Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and United Arab Emirates strongly condemn the appalling, degrading, and unacceptable actions of extremist Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir against participants in the Gaza-bound flotilla while they were in Israeli detention,” Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said on X on Monday.
The condemnation was issued jointly by the foreign ministers of Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.
“The Ministers stress that Ben-Gvir’s deliberate public humiliation of detainees is a disgraceful assault on human dignity and a clear violation of Israel’s obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, and international human rights law,” the ministry said.
The eight foreign ministers also expressed strong condemnation of what they described as extremist incitement and illegal violence committed by Ben-Gvir and other Israeli officials against Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories.
They warned that Ben-Gvir’s provocative actions risk fueling hatred and extremism while undermining efforts to advance a just and lasting peace based on a two-state solution.
In addition, the ministers demanded accountability for Ben-Gvir’s actions and urged concrete measures to stop repeated acts of provocation, incitement, and violations allegedly committed by him. They also called for steps to prevent further threats and ensure such conduct would not be tolerated or repeated.
“They further stress the imperative of protecting human rights and safeguarding the dignity and humane treatment of all detainees, and ensuring full respect for international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the statement said.
According to reports by Al Jazeera, Ben-Gvir is an ultranationalist Israeli politician and lawyer who currently oversees Israel’s national security authority. He leads the far-right Otzma Yehudit, or Jewish Power, party and is widely known for his hardline policies.
The reports described Ben-Gvir as a highly controversial figure with a history of convictions related to incitement to racism and support for extremist groups, including Kach, which has been designated as a terrorist organization in several countries. He has also frequently sparked tensions through repeated visits to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.
Due to his views and actions toward Palestinians, Ben-Gvir has faced travel and financial sanctions from countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. France and Poland have also barred him from entering their territories.
