TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis will be buried on Saturday morning, April 26, 2025. The Vatican announced on Tuesday that the funeral mass for Pope Francis will be held before the burial on Saturday at 10:00 am in Saint Peter's Square.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, will lead the mass, which will be attended by Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests worldwide. As reported by Vatican News, the Eucharistic celebration will be concluded with the Ultima commendatio and Valedictio, which mark the beginning of the Novemdiales, or nine days of mourning and a Mass for the repose of Pope Francis' soul.
The late Pope's body will be taken to St. Peter's Basilica and then to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial.
Today, Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Pope Francis' casket will be transported from the Casa Santa Marta chapel to St. Peter's Basilica, allowing Catholic followers to pay their final respects. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, will lead the transfer ceremony on April 23, which will commence at 9:00 am with a moment of prayer.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the procession will pass through the Santa Marta Square and the Protomartyrs of Rome Square. It will then exit through the Bell's Archway towards Saint Peter's Square and enter the Vatican Basilica through the central door.
At the Confession Altar, the Cardinal Camerlengo will lead the Liturgy of the Word. St. Peter's Basilica will remain open for the public to pay their final respects to the late Pope on Wednesday from 11:00 am until midnight. The Basilica is also open on Thursday from 7:00 am to midnight and Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Pope Francis, 88, passed away suddenly on Monday after suffering a stroke and a heart attack, ending his tenure known for advocating for the poor and addressing the suffering of Gaza residents from the Israeli genocide. As reported by France24, the decision for Pope Francis' burial day came after the current cardinals in Rome convened to plan the funeral. His funeral will be attended by leaders from around the world, ahead of next month's conclave to elect a new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
