TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - FIFA is reviewing match reports to determine whether disciplinary action will be taken against Argentina after several players celebrated their victory over England by displaying a banner reading "Malvinas."
Argentina, the defending champions, came from behind to defeat England 2-1 in the 2026 World Cup semifinal.
After the final whistle, Argentine players unfurled a banner stating, "Las Malvinas son Argentinas", or "The Malvinas are Argentine."
The Malvinas, known internationally as the Falkland Islands, are a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, located east of Argentina. The islands were at the center of the 1982 Falklands War between Britain and Argentina, which ended in a British victory.
"As is standard procedure, Fifa's independent disciplinary committee is currently assessing the match reports and considering the relevant circumstances before deciding on potential further steps based on the Fifa disciplinary code," FIFA said in a written statement quoted by the BBC on Friday.
The Argentine Football Association was previously fined £20,000 by FIFA in 2014 after players displayed a similar banner during a friendly match against Slovenia.
At the time, FIFA ruled that the display violated regulations regarding political messages and improper team conduct.
According to the BBC, FIFA typically imposes disciplinary sanctions on players or supporters several weeks after a tournament concludes. However, the case may be handled differently given that the incident occurred during a World Cup match.
Meanwhile, UK Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey called for the Argentine players involved in displaying the banner to be barred from participating in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain.
Davey compared the incident to UEFA's decision to suspend Spanish players Álvaro Morata and Rodri for one match after they chanted "Gibraltar is Spanish" during Spain's Euro 2024 title celebrations.
Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, has long been claimed by Spain.
The BBC also noted that FIFA has previously imposed sanctions in similar cases. South Korean midfielder Park Jong-woo was punished after displaying a banner reading "Dokdo is our territory" following South Korea's bronze-medal victory at the 2012 London Olympics.
Dokdo, known as Takeshima in Japan, refers to disputed islets in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) claimed by both South Korea and Japan. Park was found guilty several months later and received a two-match suspension.
