TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Just a week before the 2026 World Cup kicks off, FIFA introduced a last-minute policy banning fans from bringing reusable water bottles, including tumblers, into stadiums throughout the tournament.
While officials cited safety and security considerations as the basis for the decision, the abrupt policy shift has ignited widespread criticism and frustration among supporters.
Extreme summer temperatures have emerged as one of the biggest concerns surrounding the 2026 World Cup, particularly with only five of the tournament’s 16 stadiums equipped with roofs. Experts have warned that conditions at 14 venues could potentially reach dangerous heat levels during matches held in June and July.
As a result of the new policy, fans hoping to stay hydrated during the scheduled in-game water breaks may now be required to purchase bottled water inside stadiums, with prices reaching up to 5 pounds per bottle.
Spectators will no longer be allowed to refill personal containers at water stations, as reusable bottles, cups, cans, and similar items have been prohibited over concerns they could be thrown and cause injuries.
Earlier versions of the ticket holder code of conduct had allowed fans to bring empty transparent reusable plastic bottles with a capacity of up to 1 liter into stadiums. However, according to reports from The Athletic, an updated notice sent to ticket holders on June 2 confirmed that reusable water bottles are now fully prohibited inside tournament venues.
The spokesperson also stated that FIFA is coordinating with local authorities and host city organizers to implement heat-relief measures for spectators, including potential installations such as misting stations, cooling tents, fans, and hydration areas outside stadiums. In addition, bottled water sold inside venues during the 2026 World Cup will reportedly remain priced in line with standard rates for other events held at the same stadiums.
