TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The migration crisis in Ceuta, Spain's autonomous North African city, is escalating, leading to clashes between residents and illegal migrants from Morocco, according to local media reports and videos circulating on social media.
A Spanish blogger, David Santos, uploaded a video to X that recorded the chase between residents and migrants in the streets, according to ANTARA. He said that Moroccans who had settled in the El Principe area had helped expel migrants who tried to enter Ceuta illegally.
Local media outlet Ceuta Actualidad reports that a WhatsApp group called "Viva Espana" has been created, which now has more than 800 members. According to the media report, some members of the group proposed to march and “beat the migrants with sticks.”
Andalusi Party President Dris Mohamed told Cadena SER radio station that a group of youths was caught beating people who had just entered Ceuta. He condemned the vigilante action but also understood the concerns of residents.
The radio station also reported that a number of shops were forced to close temporarily for security reasons.
Amidst increasing fear and tension among residents, national and regional police have deployed officers in various locations to prevent theft and riots.
Earlier, Ceuta Mayor Juan Jesus Vivas stated that around 60,000 people from Morocco had entered Ceuta in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, the newspaper El Pais reported that the number of migrants who died while trying to cross to Ceuta reached 57.
