TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A group of militants opened fire on a group of tourists at the summit of Mount Baisaran in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday afternoon, April 22, 2025. According to India Today, at least 26 people were killed, two of whom were foreign nationals. Three security sources reported that a group of militants in military uniforms shot at the tourists while they were at Baisaran Meadows, about 5 kilometers from the resort town of Pahalgam.
Pahalgam is a popular tourist destination in the Himalayan mountain region, often bustling, especially during the summer. Due to its beauty, the area is frequently called "mini Switzerland."
The official website of District Anantnag states that Pahalgam is one of the renowned health tourism destinations in the northeastern Anantnag district. It is nestled among high hills covered with lush forests. What attracts tourists to this place is its cool and refreshing climate, and the soothing sound of the Lidder Nallah river. The location is also an important stop on the pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave, one of the sacred sites.
Meadow and Valley
Baisaran Meadows, located near Pahalgam, is a valley surrounded by towering mountains. Visitors can explore the valley on foot or by renting ponies, enjoying the scenery in a peaceful atmosphere. In the valley, there are several small villages where visitors can experience traditional Kashmiri life and enjoy light refreshments.
Baisaran Meadows can only be accessed on foot or by pony. Armed militants came to the area and opened fire on tourists gathered around the dining spots, riding ponies, or simply picnicking and enjoying the view.
India-Pakistan Conflict
The Jammu and Kashmir region has long been an area of conflict. However, in recent years, the area has emerged as a tourist destination as militant violence has subsided.
India and Pakistan each control a part of Kashmir, but both claim the region in its entirety. In the Indian-governed, Muslim-majority region of Kashmir, support the insurgents' goal of uniting the region with Pakistan or creating an independent state. Pakistan denies India's insistence that the insurgency in Kashmir is Pakistan's handiwork.
