TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), General Tandyo Budi Revita, affirmed that there is no scenario in which martial law would be declared due to the various riots and disturbances that occurred during the wave of protests over the past week. According to Tandyo, the TNI acts in accordance with the constitution.
"If there is such an assumption, it is certainly very wrong, far from what we are doing," he said after a working meeting with the House of Commission I, at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, September 1, 2025.
Tandyo explained that the TNI assists in handling the wave of protests in accordance with applicable regulations. He stated that President Prabowo Subianto directed TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto and the Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to handle the widespread protests. "We assist other institutions based on regulations and requests at that time," said Tandyo.
The Army General emphasized that the military does not want to take over security operations from the police. He affirmed that protests have always been handled by the police first. "After conditions like this arise, then we work together with the police. We have no desire to take over," said Tandyo.
Protests in Jakarta and various other regions over the past week ended in chaos. Protests on August 25 and 28-30 were marked by acts of vandalism and destruction of public facilities, such as bus stops and toll gates. Police stations in Jakarta also became targets of the crowds. Moreover, looting occurred in the homes of several politicians and government officials.
Hendardi, Coordinator of the Setara Institute, warned against allowing this situation to drag on. Hendardi predicted that there would be larger follow-up actions targeting more vulnerable groups.
Equally dangerous, he disclosed, is the worst-case scenario of new repressive policies, such as civil emergency or martial law. "Don't let it become a justification for military actions," he said on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
