BWF Admits Umpire Error in Indonesia vs. Denmark Sudirman Cup Match

8 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has responded to the Indonesian Badminton Federation's (PBSI) protest regarding a controversial umpire's call during the 2025 Sudirman Cup. The BWF has acknowledged an error made by the umpire in the group stage match between Indonesia's mixed doubles pair, Rinov Rivaldy/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, and Denmark's Jesper Toft/Amalie Magelund.

The BWF communicated its response in a letter to the PBSI, which had sought an investigation into the incident that occurred at a critical juncture in the first game of the decisive Group D encounter.

"The BWF acknowledges the mistake made by the Hong Kong umpire who incorrectly declared that the shuttlecock touched Rinov's racket at a score of 21-22, leading to Indonesia's loss of the first game," stated Yuni Kartika, the Chief of Public Relations and Media for PBSI, in a written statement released in Jakarta on Friday.

Yuni further elaborated that the BWF indicated the umpire's decision was made in good faith and without malicious intent, despite slow-motion replays clearly showing a misjudgment. "The BWF continues to take the performance of umpires and all technical officials seriously. This case will be referred to the officiating panel to determine the next steps," Yuni conveyed.

The incident garnered attention due to its occurrence at a pivotal moment, directly influencing the match's trajectory. It unfolded in the first game when Denmark held a game-point advantage at 21-20. The shuttlecock played by Rinov was wrongly deemed to have made contact with his racket by umpire Victor Wong from Hong Kong, a decision that replays contradicted.

This call allowed the Danish pair to clinch the first game with a score of 22-20. Ultimately, Rinov/Gloria lost the three-game battle with scores of 20-22, 23-21, and 16-21. Despite this setback in the mixed doubles, Indonesia secured a 4-1 victory over Denmark overall, advancing to the quarter-finals as Group D champions.

Indonesia's journey in the 2025 Sudirman Cup ended in the semifinals with a 2-3 defeat to South Korea. This result fell short of PBSI's expectations, as their target was to reach the final.
