TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester United suffered an early exit from the League Cup after a 2-3 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round at Old Trafford on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
Despite taking a two-goal lead through Shea Lacey and Mason Mount, the Red Devils ultimately lost following goals from Charalampos Kostoulas, Pascal Gross, and Maxim De Cuyper.
This result mirrors last season's campaign, when United were eliminated in the second round by Grimsby Town.
The defeat adds to the pressure following United's previous 0-1 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League, according to the EFL website as cited by Antara.
Shea Lacey put Manchester United ahead in the 8th minute with his first senior goal.
Making his first start, Lacey received a pass from Youri Tielemans on the right side of the penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot that Jason Steele failed to keep out.
United extended their lead just two minutes later. Mount capitalized on a rebound after Marcus Rashford's effort was saved by Steele, making the score 2-0.
Brighton gradually took control of the game. Malick Yalcouye created a chance after receiving a pass from Pascal Gross.
Brighton narrowed the deficit just before halftime. Kostoulas capitalized on a long cross from Jaouen Hadjam that caused a lapse in concentration in the United defense; he calmly beat Karl Darlow to make it 2-1.
Brighton's pressure continued into the second half, and they equalized in the 65th minute.
Luka Vuskovic intercepted a pass from Diogo Dalot and directed the ball into the penalty area. Gross received the ball and easily beat Darlow to level the score at 2-2.
Brighton completed the comeback five minutes later. Kostoulas sprinted down the right flank before his cut-back deflected off an opponent and fell to substitute Maxim De Cuyper.
The Belgian player had no trouble slotting the ball home from close range to make it 3-2 to Brighton.
