BMKG Predicts Eid al-Fitr 2025 to Fall on March 31

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) has released its forecast for the hilal to determine the start of Syawal 1446 H, marking Eid al-Fitr in 2025.

According to BMKG, there is a strong possibility that Eid al-Fitr in Indonesia will be celebrated simultaneously by both the government and Muhammadiyah. Previously, Muhammadiyah had set Eid for Monday, March 31, 2025.

In its report titled Hilal Prediction at Sunset on March 29-30, 2025, to Determine the Start of Syawal 1446 H, BMKG stated that the conjunction (where the Earth, Moon, and Sun align) will occur on March 29, 2025, at 10:57:38 UTC (05:57:38 PM WIB).

On March 29, sunset times across Indonesia ranged from 05:57:06 PM WIT in Jayapura to 06:48:22 PM WIB in Calang, Aceh, with similar variations on March 30.

BMKG highlighted that in some regions, the conjunction occurred before sunset. "Considering the time of the conjunction and sunset, it can be said that the conjunction occurred before sunset on March 29, 2025, in some parts of Indonesia," the report stated.

However, BMKG noted that on March 29, the hilal altitude remained below the horizon, ranging from -3.29° in Merauke to -1.07° in Sabang, making it unlikely to be sighted.

By March 30, the altitude had increased to between 7.96° (Merauke) and 11.48° (Sabang), meeting the MABIMS (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore) criteria of a minimum altitude of 3° and an elongation of 6.4°.

Based on these conditions, BMKG concluded, "Thus, if following this criterion, 1 Syawal 1446 H or Eid al-Fitr 2025 is most likely to fall on Monday, March 31, 2025."

The official Eid al-Fitr date will be confirmed through the isbat session conducted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs on March 29, 2025. This process involves nationwide hilal observations to ensure the moon's visibility before making an official announcement.
