TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau has not triggered any abnormal changes in sea levels or currents in the Sunda Strait, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) said Tuesday, September 8.
Acting Deputy for Geophysics Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan said BMKG’s monitoring through 20 tsunami gauges and an HF Radar Array in the Carita and Tanjung Lesung areas showed a low probability of a tsunami, at below 50 percent.
“Until this morning, no abnormal rise in sea levels or significant changes in surface current patterns indicating a potential tsunami had been detected,” he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Sea conditions in the Sunda Strait remain stable, with wave heights forecast at 0.5 to 3 meters. Surface weather is expected to remain mostly clear to partly cloudy from September 8 to 13, BMKG said.
BMKG Conducts Weather Modification Operations
Alongside monitoring sea conditions, BMKG has also been carrying out weather modification operations to help clear volcanic ash from the atmosphere.
According to data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) as of 7:49 a.m. local time Tuesday, Anak Krakatau recorded another small Strombolian eruption. The eruption had a maximum amplitude of 48 millimeters and lasted 19 seconds, accompanied by declining geomagnetic disturbance and volcanic lightning activity.
To accelerate the dispersal of ash particles in the atmosphere, BMKG, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the Transportation Ministry have conducted five weather modification flights using two Cessna Caravan aircraft operating from Pondok Cabe and Halim Perdanakusuma airports.
BMKG also conducted one salt (NaCl) seeding flight and one flight dispersing calcium chloride (CaCl2) as cloud condensation nuclei. Three additional flights sprayed water mist directly into the atmosphere.
Public Urged to Limit Outdoor Activities
Despite the absence of signs indicating a tsunami, Ardhasena urged people in areas affected by volcanic ash to limit outdoor activities.
Residents should wear masks and protective eyewear when going outside to reduce the risk of health problems caused by exposure to volcanic ash.
