TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canadians willing to set their alarms a little earlier than usual will be rewarded with a rare sky show. On Tuesday, a total lunar eclipse will sweep across the country in the pre-dawn hours, turning the full Moon a deep coppery red.
According to NASA, the eclipse will be visible across much of North America, including all regions of Canada, weather permitting.

When Does the Blood Moon Happen in Canada?
Viewers across Canada will be able to catch the Blood Moon, with viewing windows varying by time zone. To avoid missing the most dramatic moments, skywatchers are encouraged to check the timing carefully and adjust according to where they are.
According to CityNews Ottawa, here are the key moments in Eastern Time (ET):
3:44 a.m. ET — Penumbral eclipse begins
4:50 a.m. ET — Partial eclipse begins
6:04 a.m. ET — Totality begins (Moon turns red)
7:03 a.m. ET — Totality ends
8:17 a.m. ET — Partial eclipse ends
9:23 a.m. ET — Eclipse concludes
For Canadians in the eastern half of the country, totality will happen not long before moonset.
Why Does the Moon Turn Red?
A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow over the lunar surface. The reddish hue of the Blood Moon appears as sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering shorter blue wavelengths and allowing red light to reach the Moon.
How to Watch the Blood Moon?
Catching the Blood Moon comes with some good news: no special equipment is required. As long as the skies are clear and you have an unobstructed view of the Moon, you’re all set.
For an even better experience, try watching from a dark environment with minimal light pollution. While it’s perfectly visible to the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope can enhance the details and deepen the view of the Moon’s reddish glow.
