TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian police's Special Detachment 88 Counterterrorism (Densus 88) suspects bullying linked to the explosion at a junior high school, or SMPN 3 Sungai Raya, in Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan, on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. One of the students, who detonated molotov bombs on school ground, was allegedly bullied and exposed to 'True Crime Community.'
The case is now handled by the West Kalimantan Regional Police.
Spokesperson for Densus 88, Sr. Commr. Mayndra Eka Wardhana, said on Wednesday that the student "was interested in violent content" online and was "a member of the True Crime Community (TCC)."
The student also had a history of being bullied at the school, Densus 88 found. According to Mayndra, this pressure combined with family issues led to the desire to retaliate. "The revenge was channeled into violent actions at school," he said.
Mayndra mentioned that the incident took place on school grounds at four distinct locations. But the explosions came from detonators, or the triggers, not gas cylinders combined with firecrackers as initially suspected.
The West Kalimantan Regional Police is leading the handling of this case. The Directorate of General Crimes is investigating the case in accordance with the juvenile justice system. The Forensic Laboratory and bomb disposal teams conducted an on-site investigation to determine the characteristics of the makeshift device and the pattern of the explosion points.
Densus 88 continues to provide assistance through mapping and information exchange. Until Wednesday afternoon, Densus 88 remained in intensive coordination with the Deputy Chief of the West Kalimantan Regional Police.
Densus 88 urges families, schools, and the residents to improve supervision of children's activities, especially digital content consumption, be it related to TCC exposure or other terrorist influences. "The environment, family, and the community need to be vigilant and in control," said Mayndra.
