TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mikel Arteta was named the Premier League’s Manager of the Season for 2025/2026 after guiding Arsenal F.C. to their first English league title in 22 years.
Arteta secured the award after coming out on top in a vote involving both the public and a panel of football experts, according to the Premier League’s official website on Wednesday.
The Spanish manager beat fellow nominees Keith Andrews of Brentford F.C., Michael Carrick of Manchester United F.C., Pep Guardiola of Manchester City F.C., Andoni Iraola of AFC Bournemouth, and Regis Le Bris of Sunderland A.F.C..
Arsenal clinched the Premier League title after their closest rivals, Manchester City, slipped up at the Vitality Stadium during Matchweek 37 on May 20, settling for a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.
The result mathematically confirmed Arsenal as champions with one match still remaining in the season.
In the final round on May 24, the Gunners defeated Crystal Palace F.C. 2-1 to finish the season with 85 points at the top of the table, seven points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.
The title marked a historic moment for Arsenal, ending a 22-year wait since their last league triumph in the 2003/2004 season, when Arsène Wenger’s legendary “Invincibles” side completed the campaign unbeaten.
For Arteta, the achievement also erased the disappointment of the previous three seasons, during which Arsenal finished runners-up each time — twice behind Manchester City and once behind Liverpool F.C..
Arsenal’s title-winning campaign was built on a strong defensive foundation. The club kept 19 clean sheets in 38 matches and conceded only 27 goals, both the best records in the league this season.
In attack, Bukayo Saka and his teammates scored 71 goals, the second-highest tally in the Premier League behind Manchester City’s 77.
Arteta also became the first Arsenal manager since Arsène Wenger to win the Manager of the Season award. Wenger previously received the honor during Arsenal’s title-winning campaigns in 1997/1998, 2001/2002, and 2003/2004.
The 44-year-old Spaniard further made history as the first manager to win the Premier League title with a club he had previously represented as a player in the competition, having played for Arsenal from 2011 to 2016.
At 44 years and 54 days old, Arteta is now the third-youngest manager to win England’s top-flight title. The top two spots are still held by José Mourinho, who led Chelsea to Premier League titles at the ages of 42 years and 94 days in 2004/2005 and 43 years and 93 days in 2005/2006.
Arteta and Arsenal are now chasing a historic double as they prepare to face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain F.C. in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday, May 30, at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary.
