TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Arab League demands the United States (US) to force Israel to stop the attacks on Lebanon. The call was made by the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, on Wednesday as reported by Sputnik and quoted by Antara.
This comes after the announcement of a two-week ceasefire that has been agreed upon by the US and Iran.
According to Gheit, it would be reasonable and logical for the ceasefire agreement to also include a halt to Israel's attacks on Lebanon.
"On this basis, the Arab League calls on the United States to ensure that this is enforced on Israel, which continues its aggressive attacks on Lebanon without regard to the agreement that has been reached," said Gheit.
Previously, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that they had launched the largest attack on the Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah, since the recent escalation began. Hezbollah, which had not carried out any attacks since the ceasefire was announced, asserted their right to retaliate.
Israel claimed that the attacks on Lebanon were not part of the US-Iran ceasefire agreed upon on Tuesday night.
This argument was also echoed by US Vice President JD Vance, a few days before he was scheduled to lead talks with Tehran in Pakistan.
However, Pakistan, which had been a mediator during the negotiations, affirmed that the United States, Iran, and their allies had agreed to the ceasefire "everywhere," including in Lebanon.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated that his government had intensified diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire with Israel, following the announcement of the temporary US-Iran ceasefire.
On Tuesday night, US President Donald Trump announced that he had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran for two weeks.
A day after the announcement, on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran would soon reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which is a strategic waterway that handles about 20 percent of global oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies.
