TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muchammad Romahurmuziy’s attempt to make Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman the General Chair of the United Development Party (PPP) was not reciprocated. Romy—as Romahurmuziy is known—repeatedly tried to persuade Amran to run in the 2025 PPP Congress. He had even floated the name of the businessman from Bone, South Sulawesi, before senior clerics as a candidate to lead the party marked by the Ka’bah symbol.
But Amran rejected Romy’s invitation to join the party. He gave the former PPP General Chair two reasons. Amran said he felt uncomfortable entering PPP while his son, Amar Ma’ruf Sulaiman, held a membership card from the Gerindra Party and served as a member of the House of Representatives. Gerindra, led by Prabowo Subianto, had also endorsed Amran’s younger brother, Sudirman Sulaiman, when he won the South Sulawesi Gubernatorial election in 2024.
According to Romy, Amran believed he would lose his neutrality if he entered party politics. “If I become partisan, why would I be partisan in a party other than Gerindra?” Romy recalled Amran saying during a conversation in September 2025.
Another factor, Amran admitted he had not sought permission from President Prabowo to contest the PPP leadership. Romy urged Amran to convey his political intentions to the Palace. According to Romy, Amran delivered that message through businessman Andi Syamsuddin Arsyad, known as Isam.
