Ammunition Disposal Incident Leaves 13 Presumed Dead in Garut, West Java

3 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Garut - Thirteen people were reported dead at the ammunition destruction site in Cijeruk village, Sagara Village, Cibalong District, Garut Regency, West Java, on Monday, May 12, 2025.

"All the victims are now at Pameungpeuk Hospital," said the Cibalong District Head, Dianavia Faizal to Tempo.

He explained that the victims are currently being identified. The identities of each victim are not yet known. "That authority is not in our hands," said Faizal.

Faizal admitted that a week ago, the district received notification from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) about the ammunition destruction. The location, which is located around the south coast, is usually used for the destruction of unused or expired ammunition.

He believed that the high number of civilian casualties was suspected to be due to hunting for the remaining ammunition shells.

"Regarding the technicalities of the incident, I do not know. But it's clearly a routine destruction in Cijeruk Village. The residents already know, and if there are damaged houses due to the destruction, there is usually compensation," said Faizal.

The Public Relations of Nurhayati Hospital, Yusep Mulyana, stated that the victims consisted of 9 civilians and 4 from the security forces.

"We are only providing assistance, all victims were taken to Pameungpeuk Hospital," he said.

Based on the photos received by Tempo, the condition of the ammunition explosion victims is quite distressing, with severe injuries to the abdomen and legs.

As of the writing of this news, there is no official statement from the TNI regarding the cause of the high number of casualties from the ammunition destruction.
