TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - AirNav Indonesia, the country's air navigation service provider, will install modern systems at Banyuwangi Airport, consisting of an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and a Doppler Very High Frequency Omni-directional Range (DVOR).
"This navigation system will maximize flight safety at Banyuwangi Airport. The equipment minimizes the risk of landing failure, even in unfavorable weather conditions," said Capt. Avrianto Suratno, CEO of AirNav Indonesia, in a written statement on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
The modern navigation systems are designed to help aircraft land more precisely on the runway, especially during low visibility conditions. Specifically, the Instrument Landing System (ILS) aids precision landing, while the DVOR guides aircraft toward the airport.
Avrianto had met with Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandiani last Thursday to discuss the navigation system installation, which aims to improve air navigation services at Banyuwangi Airport.
An Naufal, Technical Facility Manager of AirNav Surabaya Branch, explained that the ILS system has three key components: the Localizer, which provides the runway's center line; the Glide Path, which dictates the 3-degree descent angle; and the Middle Marker, which determines the aircraft's distance from touchdown.
Naufal added that this modern navigation system will directly support the development of Banyuwangi Airport. "This will be an attraction for airlines to operate at Banyuwangi Airport," he noted.
The new system will also support the learning and training programs for pilot school students in Banyuwangi, specifically the Indonesian Pilot Academy (API) and the Bali International Flight Academy (BIFA).
Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani fully supports the plan. "With this system in place, air services will improve, and more airlines will express interest in establishing flight routes at Banyuwangi Airport," said Regent Ipuk.
