TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Every little thing about money never fails to pique the interest of many. Whether it’s for paramount causes or a rather trivial base, these rare U.S. bills are no exception. As a collectible treasure, paper denominations carry the same value as coins. These notes can summon up a large amount of money with the right resources.
The Rarest US Bills in Modern Days
The collector market is as expansive as one could imagine when it comes to rare U.S. bills. According to Investopedia, Nasdaq, and US Currency, some rare U.S. currencies are still deemed a prized possession for numerous reasons.
1. $2 Bill (Thomas Jefferson)
The $2 currency denomination is the rarest U.S. bill now. These bills, originally printed in 1862, have been reprinted countless printing momentum since the Civil War. Featuring a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the importance of the $2 bill in American history is obvious.
Notably, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing still recognizes the $2 bill as a formal exchange note. It’s also important to note that the $2 bill has officially been uncirculated for several years since 2018.
2. $500 Bill (William McKinley - John Marshall)
The $500 bill and its distinction were unique in that two versions were in circulation at the time. While the green seal notes bear the portrait of William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, the blue $500 bill features John Marshall, who was an admirable Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
These $500 notes have become a rare collector's treasure after being legally discontinued many decades ago. Collectors often sell this rare U.S. currency for more than its face value.
3. $1000 Bill (Alexander Hamilton - Grover Cleveland)
As one of the rarest U.S. bills, the $1000 notes experienced two eminent changes of faces during their circulation. The first one bore Alexander Hamilton upfront with a blue seal presence on the denomination. It was reported that the color was a denotation of its ability to be exchanged with physical silver.
The second version of the $1000 note didn't have the same power, however, due to the country's financial circumstances when the note was first introduced in 1928. This time, the bill featured Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.
4. $10,000 Bill (Salmon P. Chase)
Featuring Salmon P. Chase, who held several noteworthy positions within the American government, including governor, senator, and chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, the $10000 bill was hailed as one of the biggest denominations ever printed for public consumption.
The rare banknote was first released in 1918, but failed to survive the unfortunate event of the 1969 Currency Emergence because it wasn't used. Even today, only a few hundred authenticated tenders are in circulation, Investopedia reported.
5. $100,000 Bill
The last rare U.S. bill worth mentioning is the large $100,000 note, which was predominantly used as a gold certificate. Featuring a portrait of Woodrow Wilson, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing issued these bills at the time of the Great Depression in 1934 to carry the official transactions between Federal Reserve banks. The great $100,000 bills now occupy the Museum of American Finance for educational purposes.
In the vast landscape of American currency, these rare U.S. bills serve as more than just mediums of exchange, but also are enduring pieces of history. Still with the money talk, check the coverage of some of the world’s most beautiful banknotes here.
