TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on former U.S. President Donald Trump to help end the war with Russia, praising Trump’s previous role in brokering peace in the Middle East.
“If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well, including the Russian war,” Zelensky wrote on Facebook, as reported by CNA and NDTV.
Zelensky said he held a phone conversation with Trump to request his mediation in achieving peace in Ukraine, similar to Trump’s efforts in the Middle East. The call came just a day after Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine’s power grid, cutting electricity to parts of Kyiv and nine other regions.
Diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s invasion have stalled in recent months, partly due to the world’s shifting attention toward the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas over the past two years.
Trump, who announced the first phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas on Wednesday, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in August but failed to secure a peace deal.
“I had a call with US President Donald Trump. A very positive and productive one,” Zelensky said in his Facebook post, congratulating Trump on his “extraordinary ceasefire plan” in the Middle East and urging him to press Russia to negotiate.
Relations between Zelensky and Trump have improved notably since February, when the two leaders clashed in a heated televised exchange at the White House. Trump has since taken a firmer stance against Moscow while voicing continued support for Kyiv.
In a post on Truth Social in September, Trump wrote that Ukraine should aim to “take back all its occupied territory with Europe's and NATO's help“.
Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Saturday killed at least five people and knocked out power in parts of the southern city of Odesa, according to Ukrainian officials.
Moscow has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure each winter since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022, leaving millions without electricity, heat, and water.
Russia denies targeting civilians, claiming that Ukrainian forces use these energy facilities to supply electricity to their military operations.
