TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The White House has come under fire from pop star Sabrina Carpenter after using her hit song Juno in a social media video about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids without her permission.
Posted on December 2, the 21-second post featured clips of federal officers chasing and detaining individuals as part of President Trump’s aggressive agenda for cracking down on illegal immigrants. Underscoring the footage was Sabrina Carpenter’s Juno, which includes repeated lyrics like “wanna try out some freaky positions” and “have you ever tried this one?”, exaggerating footage of people getting grounded and handcuffed.
On the same day, Sabrina Carpenter condemned the use of her music, writing on X: “This video is evil and disgusting. Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda.”
In response to the Grammy-winning singer’s criticism of the Trump administration, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson referenced Carpenter’s song Manchild while issuing a sharp rebuke. According to reports from NBC News and ABC, Jackson wrote in a statement, “Here's a Short n' Sweet message for Sabrina Carpenter: we won't apologize for deporting dangerous criminal illegal murderers, rapists, and pedophiles from our country. Anyone who would defend these sick monsters must be stupid, or is it slow?”
Sabrina Carpenter now joins fellow musicians whose music catalogues have been used by government agencies without consent. Fellow pop star and former Disney actress Olivia Rodrigo faced a similar situation when her track all-american b**** was used as a soundtrack for a social media video about ICE agents detaining people, shared by the Department of Homeland Security Instagram.
In November, Rodrigo slammed, “Don't ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.” The post was eventually removed, though it remains unclear if it was by the singer or DHS.
