TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The technology company Xiaomi has introduced an experimental artificial intelligence (AI) project called Miclaw, aimed at transforming smartphones into more autonomous digital assistants.
The technology allows phones to automatically perform a range of tasks by leveraging installed applications and built-in system features.
Miclaw is powered by Xiaomi’s large language model, MiMo, and is designed to go beyond responding to simple commands. The system is built to interpret user intent and carry out the multiple steps required to complete a task independently.
“Rather than simply answering questions or generating text, the system is designed to interpret user intentions and complete tasks by interacting with different tools on the phone,” technology site Gizmochina reported on March 6, 2026.
After users grant permission, the AI assistant can access system-level functions and supported third-party applications to carry out commands. In practice, the assistant can determine which tools to use and arrange the sequence of actions needed to fulfill a request without requiring continuous user input.
The technology operates through what Xiaomi calls an “inference–execution loop.” In this process, the AI analyzes a user’s request, selects relevant tools, executes the required actions, and then evaluates the results before moving on to the next step. This cycle continues until the requested task is completed.
Miclaw also features a memory system that allows the AI to learn from repeated interactions. The assistant can retain important context from previous usage, helping it better understand user preferences and handle longer or more complex tasks more effectively.
However, Xiaomi emphasized that the project remains in an experimental stage. For now, Miclaw is being released as a closed beta program available only through invitation.
The early testing phase currently supports several devices, including the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition.
