TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wikipedia ensures that it will not replace its human editors and volunteers with artificial intelligence (AI). The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind the online encyclopedia, announced a three-year strategy for the use of artificial intelligence focusing on feature development, not on eliminating human involvement.
In its statement, the Wikimedia Foundation conveyed that AI will be utilized to address technical barriers that often disrupt the work of editors, moderators, and content overseers. This innovation is designed as a tool to enable them to focus more on their tasks without being burdened by technical issues.
The function of AI will be directed to handle repetitive and time-consuming tasks. Artificial intelligence will automate tedious processes, improve information accessibility, and provide more space for editors to engage in discussions and decision-making that require human consideration in creating or updating Wikipedia entries.
Furthermore, this technology will also be used to assist in the automatic translation process and facilitate onboarding for new volunteers who wish to join the Wikipedia community.
"We believe that our future work with AI will be successful not only because of what we do, but how we do it," wrote Chris Albon, the director of the machine learning at Wikimedia Foundation, in an official blog post quoted from TechCrunch report on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
"Our efforts will use our long-held values, principles, and policies (like privacy and human rights) as a compass," he continued.
The Wikimedia Foundation emphasizes that their approach to AI development will continue to place humans at the center, upholding user control. They are also committed to using open-source-based systems, maintaining transparency, and "take a nuanced approach to multilinguality," which is a fundamental part of Wikipedia.
Wikipedia also highlights that human contributions will remain at the core of the content curation and editing process. Wikipedia puts renewed importance on maintaining accuracy and quality knowledge amid the rapid development of generative AI that is still prone to making mistakes and conveying inaccurate information.
