5 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA deadly bus accident occurred in front of Bukit Surungan terminal, Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, leaving 12 people dead and 23 others injured.

An ALS bus with license plate number B 7512 FGA serving the Medan-Bekasi route via Padang experienced brake failure when descending a steep road before the terminal.

"Our initial estimate is that the bus would have entered the terminal if the brakes did not malfunction. Due to brake failure, the bus missed the terminal and crashed into the wall next to the health center," said the chief of traffic police at the Padang Panjang Resort Police, First Police Inspector Jamalludin, when contacted by Tempo on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

Of the total 35 on board who successfully evacuated, there were 12 fatalities, including seven men including a boy, and five women, including one girl. Meanwhile, 23 other victims suffered injuries, including 17 men and 6 women.

"We have conducted an on-site investigation together with the Accident Analysis Expert Team (TAA) of the West Sumatra Regional Police to determine the exact cause of this accident. The number of passengers cannot be confirmed yet," he said.

The police have detained the bus driver and his assistant for probing as well as urine tests. Evacuees were transferred to the Padang Panjang Regional Hospital (RSUD) with assistance from various parties, including the Padang SAR, Fire Department, BPBD, Public Order Agency, Transportation Agency, the Red Cross, and Mobile Brigade.

The Padang Panjang Resort Police have also established a Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) post at RSUD and prepared a trauma healing team consisting of psychologists from RSUD and the Regional Police to assist the victims. Coordination with Jasa Raharja has also been carried out for the victims' insurance procedures.

A joint accident handling post has been set up at RSUD Padang Panjang to facilitate coordination in treating the victims and their families.

The police urge bus companies to regularly inspect their vehicles, especially the braking systems, to prevent similar accidents in the future.
