TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The increase in the price of Pertamax and Pertamax Green fuel poses a risk to public consumption. Chief Economist of Trimegah Sekuritas Indonesia, Fakhrul Fulvian, believes the Indonesian government should promptly counteract this increase with a fast, targeted, and effective cash social assistance program to maintain purchasing power.
He added that it is necessary to ensure that the affected public does not bear the entire burden of this adjustment. "The government must immediately prepare direct cash assistance as an economic buffer for vulnerable groups, lower middle-class, and those most affected by the increase in transportation costs and daily needs," he said in a written statement on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
According to data from the National Socio-Economic Survey of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the transportation group usually accounts for 10-15 percent of total household spending, with fuel being the largest component. Thus, price hikes could have a significant impact.
Fakhrul believes that Indonesia currently has much better technological capabilities. The digitalization of payment systems, integration of population data, banking, and the development of artificial intelligence allow assistance to be distributed more quickly and accurately.
To prevent a significant decline in household consumption, the distribution of assistance should begin immediately after the price hike takes effect. "The sooner the assistance is provided, the smaller the risk of a slowdown in public consumption. This is important because household consumption remains the backbone of Indonesia's economic growth," he said.
The news of the increase in these two non-subsidized fuels first emerged on Tuesday night, June 9, 2026. Pertamina Patra Niaga then announced an increase in the prices of Pertamax and Pertamax Green starting from June 10, 2026, with an increase of more than 30 percent.
The price of non-subsidized Pertamax (RON 92) rose by about 32 percent from Rp12,300 to Rp16,250 per liter. Meanwhile, for Pertamax Green 95 (RON 95), increased by 31 percent from Rp12,900 to Rp17,000 per liter.
"The adjustment of prices for Pertamax and Pertamax Green was done after going through an evaluation process in accordance with the price formula set by the government," said Roberth MV Dumatubun, the Corporate Secretary of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, as quoted from ANTARA.
