The White House has announced a number of names who will facilitate the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky. Russian media, RT, reported that the US officials who will be involved are Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and presidential envoy Steve Witkoff.
"They will lead coordination efforts to realize the negotiations as soon as possible," said press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
Leavitt said that US President Donald Trump had spoken with Putin by phone. "Putin has agreed to initiate the next phase of the peace process, which will be followed, if necessary, by a trilateral meeting," Leavitt said.
The trilateral meeting is planned to be attended by Trump, Putin, and Zelensky.
Several locations are being considered for the bilateral meeting between Zelensky and Putin, as well as the ensuing trilateral meeting attended by Trump. According to CNN, among these countries are Budapest and Switzerland, according to officials.
An official said that Trump himself had discussed the possibility of Budapest as the location for the meeting of Putin and Zelensky. Trump discussed this in a recent phone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is an ally of Trump and Putin.
White House officials had pinned Hungary as one of the summit meeting candidates for the Trump-Putin summit last week. A warrant for Putin's arrest issued by the International Criminal Court in 2023 led to Russia rejecting most other European destinations. However, the US and Russia eventually agreed to hold the meeting at a military base in Alaska.
