UK Pushes for Russell Group University Campus to Open in Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta British Ambassador to Indonesia Dominic Jermey hopes that a Russell Group campus will soon open in Jakarta, providing Indonesia's youth with access to world-class higher education.

As reported by ANTARA, Jermey expressed this hope on the sidelines of the King's Birthday Party in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 10.

He stated that the Indonesian government's support for the plan is a positive sign for strengthening educational cooperation between the two countries. Ambassador Jermey noted that President Prabowo also supports establishing a Russell Group campus—an elite British university campus—in Jakarta, expressing hope that it will open soon.

The Russell Group is an association that houses 24 leading research universities in the UK, including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London.

Jermey explained that several British universities had already opened educational programs in Indonesia. These include King's College London in Malang, East Java, as well as Lancaster University and Deakin University in Bandung, West Java.

He says that the presence of these educational institutions provides Indonesian students with broader opportunities to access an international-standard education without leaving the country. He emphasized that young Indonesians can pursue higher education in Indonesia while benefiting from opportunities offered by universities, including those from the United Kingdom.

In addition to strengthening educational cooperation through the presence of international campuses, the UK will also reopen scholarships for Indonesian students. Jermey announced that the Chevening scholarship program for master's degree programs will open from July to August this year.

Through this program, young Indonesians have the opportunity to pursue Master's studies in the UK with full funding and are expected to contribute to Indonesia's development after completing their education.

Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian encouraged Indonesia's youth to pursue an education at reputable international universities to develop their skills and expand their global networks.

"I encourage young Indonesians to go to the UK, which is one of the best options for studying and networking," he said, adding that good-quality universities are also great places to network.

The British Embassy in Jakarta held a King's Birthday Party with the theme "UK Celebrates Innovation and Five Years as an ASEAN Dialogue Partner" on Wednesday evening.

The event was also attended by several national figures, including Minister of Religion Nasaruddin Umar, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno, Deputy Governor of East Java Emil Dardak, former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, and Didit Hediprasetyo.
