Tokopedia Addresses Layoff Rumors Following TikTok Merger

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rumors of employee layoffs have emerged once again at the e-commerce platform Tokopedia. This comes just a year after its merger with TikTok, which acquired a 75% stake for US$1.5 billion or approximately Rp23 trillion.

A spokesperson for TikTok offered a statement that neither confirmed nor denied the layoffs. "We routinely evaluate the business needs and make various adjustments to strengthen our organization and provide better services to our users," the person said in a written statement on Monday, August 25, 2025.

The merger of Tokopedia and TikTok occurred shortly after Tokopedia and GoTo merged and went public on the stock exchange in April 2022. At the time, GoTo, under the stock code PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk., still maintained control over Tokopedia.

Despite the rumors, the TikTok spokesperson confirmed that the company, a subsidiary of the Chinese startup ByteDance, will continue to invest in the Indonesian market. “We continue to invest in Tokopedia and Indonesia as part of our strategy to drive sustainable growth and innovation," the spokesperson stated.

Meanwhile, GoTo's annual report reveals a decrease in its employee count over two years. In 2023, GoTo had 7,522 employees, which dropped to 3,352 by 2024.

In 2024, Tokopedia executed a major layoff, letting go of 450 employees. Nuraini Razak, Vice President of Corporate Communications at Tokopedia, attributed those layoffs to role redundancies within the company.

She explained that the decision was made after a comprehensive review of every business unit, department, and function to create a more robust e-commerce and marketplace team in Indonesia.

“One of the challenges we face is redundancy within some of our e-commerce teams," Nuraini stated when contacted via a messaging app on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
