TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo, these three destinations are among the favorites for Indonesians who are on vacation in Japan. These three cities offer distinct experiences. Tokyo offers modern and traditional culture, Osaka is a culinary center, and Sapporo offers a winter experience with its snow.
Japan Airlines Marketing Manager Benny Herlian said these three cities are not only favorites among Indonesian tourists, but also among most travelers from around the world. "So they're still favorites, and unfortunately, they're also favorites for all (tourists), not just Indonesians; Westerners also enjoy them," he said at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
Besides Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo, Benny said Indonesian tourists also enjoy visiting Chiba City and Kyoto. He explained that cities with cultural and historical attractions like Kyoto are highly sought after by tourists from outside Japan.
"But there are always crowds and long lines, even though there's so much to explore," Benny said.
Exploring New Things
He said these conditions encourage Indonesian tourists to try new tourist destinations. He said that Indonesian tourists generally prefer tourist destinations that offer a variety of attractions and new experiences. "Japan is vast, there are several prefectures to explore," he said.
He cited the examples of Akita and Aomori Prefectures in Tohoku, northern Japan, which offer beautiful natural scenery and various interesting festivals. Tourists can also participate in apple picking activities in Aomori.
Benny also stated that Japan is a safe and comfortable country for tourists to visit, easily accessible, and with excellent supporting tourism services.
Japan received 39.06 million foreign visitors from January to November 2025. This number surpassed the previous year's record of 36.87 million. The country was also named the world's favorite destination this year by readers of Condé Nast Traveler.
