TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - William Hsu, the Director of Press and Information at the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO), revealed that Indonesia is one of Taiwan's investment destinations. He revealed that the manufacturing sector is a priority for Taiwan.
Hsu stated that Taiwan has opened various processing plants, especially in the Central Java region. He believes that the presence of these factories can absorb local labor. "For example, factories for sports shoes, garments, textiles, machinery, and many more. This also requires many employees," said Hsu during his visit to the Tempo Building in Jakarta on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
Hsu mentioned that Indonesia is one of Southeast Asia's main countries for investment destinations. Apart from Indonesia, Taiwan has invested heavily in Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar.
Hsu explained that Taiwan also faces challenges in investing in Indonesia. For example, he continued, some slow licensing processes create their challenges. "Indonesia sometimes takes too long to issue permits, and there are many regulations. That's why Indonesia must create regulations that make it easier," he said.
Furthermore, Hsu also revealed that Taiwan has invested heavily in Indonesia through "third-party countries," such as Singapore and Hong Kong. He said this is because Indonesia and Taiwan do not yet have a free trade agreement (FTA).
